Deep sea coral investigations offshore Norway - WHERE IS LOPHELIA?
September 2009
Even the deep, cold waters of our Northern seas can contain rare and precious corals. Lophelia pertusa is a deep sea reef building coral
typically found in waters between 200 and 3000 metres depth.
Fugro Survey's environmental scientists have investigated drilling sites for operators, offshore Norway in order to detect the presence of
this vulnerable species; as a recent Cross Section article recounts.
Sidescan sonar and multibeam bathymetry data is used for seabed features mapping and when correlated with digital photography and video
images our environmental specialists can provide maps of marine habitats.
Environmental assessment and habitat mapping, such as this, enables offshore operators to consider drilling locations that avoid the risk
of disturbing or damaging these habitats.
