Field Operations

We operate a full range of benthic grabs and corers, water sampling equipment, water profilers and various state-of-the-art digital video/stills cameras (with a drop-down lightweight camera deployment frame). In addition dedicated video sledges are available for running video transects; especially useful for biotope mapping. Environmental personnel have previously operated eyeball ROVs for investigation of seabed habitats in addition to manifold and pipeline inspections.

Benthic Sampling

Grabs

  • Day grabs (0.1m2)
  • Van Veen grabs (0.1m2 and 0.05m2)
  • Hamon grabs (0.1m2)
Corers
  • Box Corers (0.25m2 and 0.1m2)
  • Diver operated hand corers
  • Piston and gravity corers (Geotechnical Department)
We also own a number of semi-automated sieving machines (i.e. Wilson Auto-Siever)., for efficient processing of sediment samples for macrofaunal analysis

Water Sampling and Profiling

Samplers and Direct Reading Profilers
We own and operate a variety of water samplers (Niskin water samplers) of different volume. We own, or have access to, a range of shallow water profilers (e.g. the YSI 6600) or deeper water profilers (e.g. Idronaut or Datasonde).

Seabed Imagery Options

Vertical/ Oblique Facing Digital Stills Camera
Fugro Environmental currently own and operate a number of Simrad Kongsberd digital video/ stills camera system. Images of the seabed may be vertical or oblique. Stills photographs are obtained through selection of the digital video image at the scientist's discretion.

A video overlay system is used to overlay a navigation string directly onto the screen (i.e. showing time, date, grid coordinates and water depth). Survey details such as Client name (and logo), project title, job number and site details can also be displayed.

Towed Video Camera
We also own and operate a video sledge or towfish (where video transects are required over protected or sensitive habitats such as coral reefs). These towed camera arrays may be used for obtaining continuous coverage of seabed habitats.

ROV Video Camera
Fugro Environmental owns, or has access to, a range of ROVS. We generally operate small eyeball ROVs for investigation of sensitive habitats or the inspection of specific objects such as manifolds or pipelines.

Digital Camera Operational Photographs

Fugro Survey own and operate high resolution digital video/ stills subsea cameras. This specially designed system may be used to drift over areas of interest or alternatively can be adapted for use as a lander to take oblique photographs.

Digital Stills Photography Examples

High resolution photography of deep water fauna and flora found off Norway (Environmental Dept., Fugro Survey Ltd. March 2004)

A realtime video stream is used to assist with framing stills photographs. This footage is also used to assist with interpretation of habitats.

Photographs may be magnified to enable identification of fauna and flora
